Prevalence of Scoliosis and the Lower Limb Muscle Tightness
Park Un-Jin

Abstract
Objective: To investigate the prevalence rate of scoliosis and lower limb muscle tightness.

Method: A total of 828 subjects were assessed with direct whole spine radiographic examination using Titan 2000? (COMED Inc, Seoul, Korea). Subjects were also evaluated with the aim of assessing the incidence of lower limb muscle tightness using popliteal angle measurement.

Results: The prevalence rate of scoliosis was 12.1% (male 11.1%, female 13.0%) and the prevalence rate of tightness of the lower extremities was 17.6% on right side and 19.4% on left side. Bilateral popliteal angles of female student are larger than those of male student. As the age increased, popliteal angles increased (p < 0.05).

Conclusion: These findings suggest a larger prevalence of scoliosis than previous studies suggest. In addition, this study provides preliminary evidence that there is no correlation between scoliosis and lower limb muscle tightness.
